Three High Street District Galleries opened their exhibitions on Wednesday on 23rd November 2011. All exhibitions run through to Christmas, so come and take a look.

ANNA MILES GALLERY, upstairs at 4j/47 High Street opens a very special show

SARAH HILLARY
Floating
Preview: Wednesday 23 November 6 – 8pm

Sarah Hillary’s painting often forms associations between the art she works with in a professional capacity and art she encounters in her personal life.  As Principal Conservator at Auckland Art Gallery, Hillary can spend days surveying the surfaces of some of New Zealand’s most revered paintings under a microscope. In Floating, she turns her attention to the intimate world of the gift. The shells she has painted on have been given to her by friends and relations. The subjects she has chosen to paint are parts of gifts to her and members of her family.

Exhibition runs till 22 December 2011.

DES HELMORE
Being there. Where?

Preview 23 November 5.30 – 7.30pm

Des Helmore has always been fascinated with the environs around him, be it a rural or city landscape. He reduces details and brings the world around us into the abstract. It is often the seemingly incidental features, which provide attraction for Helmore and act as signifiers of the type of site depicted.

Helmore’s new suite of works Being there, where? will delight both those familiar and unfamiliar with his work with their beautifully painted surfaces as he parles with Google Earth!

On now at the Anna Miles Gallery:

47 High St, Suite 4J, Auckland

JOHANNA PEGLER
City of Rivers / River of Trees
26 October – 19 November 2011

JOHANNA PEGLER renders the unprepossessing remarkable. Her painting is irretrievably attuned to unsung aspects of the local landscape. She has an eye for fragile textures; patches of erosion, sheep trails, disheveled cabbage trees, misshapen macrocarpas. Her first-person observation of particular environments, and their animal inhabitants, is matched by slow, deliberate consideration for the painted surface.

She is described by Ron Brownson, senior curator in New Zealand and Pacific Art at Auckland Art Gallery as “a living hero…She has a huge heart for the truths within other’s lives.
