Citi Flora turns 15 today, a whole 15 years in the High St District. Owned by mother daughter team, Sonya (right) and Jennifer (left), Citi Flora kept the district blooming for 14 years from their High St store and last year made the move to a bigger space, one hop over on O’Connell St. You might know the beautiful petal trails they leave on the footpath outside their store!

Sonya has 36 years of floristry under her belt and daughter, Jennifer has worked as a florist for 9 years. These ladies know what they are doing and today to celebrate their birthday they have organized a ‘bunch’ (excuse the pun) of treats for anyone who stops by. There’s 15% off everything, an individually wrapped rose for the first 100 people who come in to wish them well and delicious Harney and Sons tea tasting went on from 12 – 2pm.

Here’s a few questions we asked Sonya and Jennifer when we popped in to wish them well yesterday. Happy Birthday ladies!

What’s it like working with family?
Every time we make a good result when we make it together. Mum’s experience helps me find a better solution and my creations help Mum make a novel combination.

What is your favorite flower?
Jennifer: I love every flower but my favorite flower is Early Cheer.
Sonya: Sweet Avalanche Rose.

What is your least favorite flower?
None!

What’s the best piece of advice your mother has given you?
Jennifer: Diligence

What’s the best piece of advice your daughter has give you?
Sonya: Cleanliness

What would you like to do if you weren’t florists?
Jennifer: Skincare and cosmetic adviser.
Sonya: The Mayor!

Your favorite place in the city?
Of course High Street District!

What is special about The District for you?
It’s home ground!

Favourite food?
Jennifer: I love Mum’s home made Korean food.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self.
Sonya: Be an expert. Don’t hesitate to study English. Smile.
Jennifer: Jennifer, you have to make good relationships with many people. Don’t be shy.

And below is Jennifer’s ‘Citi’ map of where you can find them in the district.

Citi Flora. 12 O’Connell St, High St District.

The High Street District, (encompassing O’Connell Street, Chancery, Vulcan and Durham Lanes) has a long and proud history as a wellspring for so much of New Zealand’s best modern creative culture.

Through the years, the district’s laneways and basements have played host to some of this country’s most notorious night spots while it’s streets have fostered many of our greatest designers.

Always a leader, the district’s pioneering attitude and entrepreneurial spirit can be traced from the building of the city’s first store in 1841 to the appearance of New Zealand fashion on the runways of the world.

Behind it promoting the District is the High Street Guild, founded by a collective of local business people passionate about the district. The High Street Guild was formed to ensure the area’s proud legacy lives on. Our aim is to encourage excellence, culture and community while attracting like-minded people to shop, work and play in the High Street District.

The High Street District Gazette is our window into the High Street world, where we celebrate our stories, our happenings, our characters and our style. Join us on our journey through New Zealand’s most fashionable district, High Street.
